How to Apply for a PAN Card Online: Step-by-Step Guide

A PAN card, known as a Permanent Account Number, is an identification that can be used to authenticate identity and help in preventing tax avoidance. It consists of 10-digit unique alphanumeric numbers, and having a PAN card is compulsory according to regulation 114B of the Indian Tax Regulations. The process of applying for a PAN card is quite simple, both offline and online.
So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the PAN card online.
Through NSDL Website
Applications for PAN cards can be submitted online through the NSDL website an authorised website to issue and modify the PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department.
- Visit the NSDL website.
- Select the application type—New PAN-Indian citizen or New PAN-Foreign citizen. After this enter the personal information such as name, DOB, email, and mobile number and submit.
- You will receive a token number on your email ID and click on the continue with PAN application form.
- Select the mode of submission of necessary documents for PAN card and if you require a physical PAN card. Fill in the details on the PAN card application form such as personal details, contact details, AO code and upload the documents.
- After submitting the application form, the payment page will appear. Select the mode of payment and pay the required fees. It can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking.
After the successful payment an acknowledgement will be displayed through which you can track the application status.
Through Income-Tax Portal
People who have a valid Aadhaar number can apply for e-PAN instantly without filling an application form. Here are the steps to follow:
- Go to the official website of income tax and select the instant e-PAN option.
- Select the Get new e-PAN on the next page
- Submit your Aadhaar number and select “Continue.”
- The OTP validation page will be displayed. Enter the OTP that was sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, and select “Continue.”
- Your confidential information, including your name and date of birth, will be displayed in accordance with your Aadhaar card.
- To verify your email, select “Validate Email”
An acknowledgement number and a conformation message will be sent to your mobile device. Upon the allocation of an e-PAN, you will be informed of same. The e-PAN card is typically generated within 10 minutes and can be downloaded from the Income Tax portal.
Through UTIITSL Website
People can also apply through UTIITSL website—another authorized website to issue the PAN card. Here are the steps to apply for PAN card:
- Visit the UTIITSL website
- Click under the “PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI” tab or “Foreign Citizen” tab
- Select the “Apply New PAN card (form 49A” or “Apply New Card (form 49AA)” tab
- Choose the mode of document submission, applicant status, the mode of PAN card and click the ‘Submit’ button.
- You will be given a reference number. Click ‘OK’.
- Fill in the necessary details on the form, like personal details, document details, contact and parent details, address details and other details. Upload the necessary documents and submit the form.
- Proceed to make the application fee payment. On successful payment, a confirmation will be shown and mailed to your email ID.
